We have a fantastic resident artist

and so

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Merryn Trevethan

We are very happy to welcome back to our visual arts Artist in Residence this week, who first worked with the students, staff and parents at GWA in 2015.

Merryn Trevethan is an Australian artist based in Singapore. Her practice has focuses on our relationship to living in increasingly globalised cities, constantly in a state of flux. She uses her observations of the cityscape to tease out the uncertainty of perception and the complexity of vision. Trevethan works across a range of disciplines including public art, wall works, paintings, drawings, sculptural forms and artists books, all linked by her use of colour.

Trevethan completed her Masters of Fine Art (by Research) at Monash University, Melbourne in 2005. Since then she has exhibited widely in Australia and also internationally. Trevethan recently held her first solo exhibition in Singapore at the Australian High Commission. She returns regularly to Australia to participate in solo and group exhibitions, public art projects and to teach workshops.

Her selected engagements in Singapore include being awarded First Prize for the DRIVE - Public Art Open Call, where she painted a mural on an outdoor wall at Gillman Barracks.  In 2015, she was commissioned to create large-scale mural artworks for the new Facebook Headquarters in Singapore and has just completed an expansion of this project. Over 3 months, Trevethan created a Public Art Intervention at HUFF Outdoor Studio at Gillman Barracks. This Self- initiated, Artist in Residence Project saw her transform an unused outdoor studio left by another artist (as a sculptural object) into a site for spatial experimentation. She is represented in Singapore by Yeo Workshop, Gillman Barracks.

Indonesian Batik and Angklung

with Mrs. Kurniawati Darnis

My name is Kurniawati Darnis—better known as-Upi. I am a mother with 2

lovely boys, Hakeem and Helmi, ages 17.5 and 15. I have a Masters in Business Administration background, but my passion is in photography. I love arts and crafts and I also love to try some new things.

As an Indonesian, I am very proud of Batik, the famous fabrics originated from Indonesia. To complete my interest and admiration of Batik, I decided to take some lesson on how to make Batik in Jakarta. It was an interesting lesson and I would like to share it with others. So, during the GWA Singapore 2017 Art Week, I will be sharing a little bit of my knowledge on how to make Batik in a simple method. Hopefully, it is going to be a fun and memorable experience for the kids, the teachers and the parents.

Découpage with Mrs. Elmi Ridha

My name is Elmi. I am a mother of 3 kids. They're in grade 8, 5, and KG 2.

I am a housewife. My hobby is making craft and art. Usually in my

spare time, I make jewelleries such as brooch, safety pin, necklace

etc, like what i had introduced it on last Art week. I do have a lot of fun

of making it and it's been my small business for the last 11 years.

In this Art Week, I will try to introduce something related with craft and art too. It called Decoupage. Decoupage or Découpage is the art of decorating an object by gluing colored paper cutouts onto it. Commonly, an object like a small box or an item of furniture is covered by cutouts from magazines or from purpose-manufactured papers or napkins.

I use media made from pandan leaf. I find it amusing and addicting to make this craft. Hope you can enjoy it too.

Skye Jefferys is a Melbourne born, Singapore-based artist.                            Working predominantly with large abstract paintings, her practice is concerned with limitations, whether real or imagined, and how we respond to these. Each surface is completely covered with vibrant colour – pushing, dabbing, scribbling, sploshing strokes – deliberate and dynamic brushwork, layered, textured, intertwining and overlapping. At times the bold colours are discordant, others times they are harmonious, but she is always trying to create a conversation or a relationship between the colour and the form. Once complete, the compositions find their balance, yet remain unending. They are imbued with potential twists and turns, possibilities that might breathe beyond the works’ boundaries.

Skye graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication in 2003 and embarked on a Graduate Certificate in Visual Arts at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2010. She has had two successful solo exhibitions in Canberra and Melbourne and been curated into group exhibitions including TDF Open House in 2013.

My artwork is an attempt to generate positivity,                                             happiness and serenity. Most of my artwork is                                          contemporary and is a depiction of my imagination and                         creativity. I work with both oil and acrylic colours, oil being my personal favourite. I like to work with lot of vibrant colours and is usually inspired by nature.
